A connector accessory may be defined as a component used with a connector to enhance
its operational characteristics but which does not interfere with its basic function of
connecting and disconnecting electrical circuits. In many situations however, the useful life
of a connector would be severely compromised without the proper accessory.
The extensive range of connector applications and usage environments accounts for the
wide variety of accessory configurations, each one designed to meet a specific need. We cover the following connector accessory categories:
BACKSHELLS - Backshells are by far the most complex and widely used accessories. The backshells in this catalog are divided into 9 sub-groups according to their function as follows:
Environmental Backshells
Environmental EMI/RFI Backshells
Grommet Nuts
Non-Environmental Backshells
Non-Environmental EMI/RFI Backshells
Potting Boots and Rings
Shield Terminating Backshells
Shrink Boot Adapters
Strain Reliefs and Cable Clamps
BULKHEAD ADAPTERS - These accessories are used when it is necessary to route a cable through a bulkhead or panel.
Bulkhead Adapters utilize flange or jam nut mount styles. They are available with environmental
sealing, shield terminating, strain relief and angular options.
CONDUIT FITTINGS - The increasing use in the 1930's of radio communication equipment in vehicles and aircraft led to the development of Conduit Fittings as the first EMI/RFI protective devices. The piston engines used at that time were notorious generators of electrical interference.
The resemblance between these parts and those found in a plumber's kit is more than coincidental. Many of the configurations that found their way into the military system were based on the commercially available plumbing Components Corp. first used to shield cabling from electrical interference. Conduit Fittings were replaced as more sophisticated connectors and shielding methods evolved over the years, and now are used mainly for feed-thru applications.
DUMMY RECEPTACLES - Dummy Receptacles (sometimes called storage Receptacles) are devices used to protect a disconnected plug from physical damage as well as from moisture and particle contamination. Dummy Receptacles conform dimensionally to their connector counterparts except that they have no inserts or contacts, hence, the name Dummy Receptacle.
Many plug connectors have been damaged beyond repair because a disconnected cable was
dropped or left lying on the floor. Attaching an unused cable to a panel mounted Dummy
Receptacle keeps the plug out of harm's way and protects its mating surfaces and contacts.
Dummy Receptacles also find use as plug holding fixtures on wire harness boards.
DUST CAPS - Available for both plug and receptacle connectors, Dust Caps protect the mating surfaces of the connector from physical damage and seal the connector against particle and moisture contamination.
All Dust Caps consist basically of a cylindrical body closed at one end. Dust Caps for receptacles have either a gasket or 'O' ring for sealing. An optional component is an attachment method which assures that when the Dust Cap is not in use, it remains in the immediate area of the connector. While the Military has provisions for only two attachment configurations (sash chain or wire rope), various manufacturers offer several additional types (beaded chain, nylon rope, etc.) and a variety of finishes.
GASKETS FOR FLANGE MOUNT RECEPTACLE - These Gaskets are configured to serve two purposes. Elastomeric Gaskets are used for environmental applications when it is necessary to seal the mating surfaces of the connector and mounting panel. Gaskets containing conductive material are used to ground the shell for EMI/RFI protection. Although the range of available Military part numbers is limited, various manufacturers can supply Gaskets for any Military or commercial cylindrical connector series.
MOUNTING NUTS FOR JAM NUT RECEPTACLE - Mounting Nuts are used to secure a jam nut receptacle to a panel. A recent revision to MS3186 has obsoleted several MS drawings. This new revision allows the use of new material and finishes.
MOUNTING PLATES FOR FLANGE MOUNT RECEPTACLES - The usual way to mount a wall or box mount receptacle to a panel is to use four screws, flat washers, lock washers and nuts. This mounting hardware can be dropped or lost. Mounting Plates have captive self-locking nuts which eliminate this potential problem. The use of Mounting Plates also speeds up and simplifies the mounting of connectors on large panels where it is difficult or impossible for one person to do the installation using standard loose hardware. Mounting Plates are available in heavy, medium and light duty version.
PIPE THREAD ADAPTERS - As the name implies, these Adapters provide the means to interface with conduit having pipe threads per American Standard Tapered Pipe Thread, ASA B21. Not covered by MIL-C-85049, these adapters are supplied by several manufacturers and are shown in Section 19.
RUBBER BUSHING - Rubber Bushings are used in conjunction with Cable Clamps and serve two basic purposes. When the wire harness diameter is smaller than the minimum opening of the clamp, Rubber Bushings of incremental sizes are telescoped to build up the cable diameter. Bushings are also used to protect the wire bundle in the clamping area of the Strain Relief.
SHIELD TERMINATIONS - These devices are used to terminate shields of individual wires in the cable bundle. A variety of configurations are available for individual or mass termination.
SHORTING CANS - Shorting Cans provide a total enclosure for the rear of a connector. They are used for the fabrication of shorting plugs, special purpose test connectors or for the installation of discrete Components Corp. .
